Yarny Invasion of Asheville!

Come see us at the Big Crafty this Sunday, 7/11 in Asheville!

We are super excited to be included in this show of awesomeness. Some of our favorite crafters will be there too, like Fuzzy Ink and Crankypants and Happy Whosits.

And my favorite part? The delicous Short Street Cakes (the ONE place that makes gluten-free cupcakes!) will be there with cupcakes. Woo!

You can get directions to the show here.

We will be in spot #5, which you can find on this map (pdf).

Need even more incentive? Mention that you saw this blog post and you’ll get a FREE pattern. It’s super secret and not for sale yet, but it looks like this:

I hope to see you on Sunday!

See you tonight?

At Stitch Therapy!

Come get your stitch on (no matter what kind of stitch it is – knitting, crochet, sewing, anything) at Scratch Brick Oven in Johnson City at the corner of Roan + Unaka (here’s a map).

We’ll be stitching and chatting from 5p until…whenever we wear ourselves out!

You can drop by at any time, whether you choose to have a brick oven pizza (yum!) or not, there’s no pressure to order anything. There IS pressure to bring your crafting and share it!

If you can’t make it today, then join World Wide Knit in Public day this Saturday at the Jonesborough Library.  Come by anytime from 9a – 2p. You can read more about this worldwide event here.

If you have suggestions for future places for Stitch Therapy, share it in the comments!

Knitting Lessons – in the news!

This week, our knitting lessons are in the Jonesborough Herald and Tribune!
Article on my knitting lessons!

The story centers on some of my students, the Misterly family. The picture you see above is of 11 year old knitting machine, Maggie. I’ve been teaching the Misterlys (mom, daughter and 8 yr old son) for just about a year. During that year they’ve made toys, sweaters and finished up piles of unfinished knitting!

Check out the entire article here.

If you’re looking for more information about knitting lessons with Tara Swiger, you can find it here.

Did you read the article? Let me know in the comments!

Miss us?

Yay!

It’s finally time for our first without-borders event!

This weekend we (and all of the yarn) will be at the Lavender Festival!

May 22, Saturday, 10-5
+
May 23, Sunday, Noon-5
at The Gardens at Eureka Inn + 1st Ave.
127 Main St.
Jonesborough, TN

The (free!) Festival includes:

  • Seminars on using herbs
  • Herbal Luncheon
  • Live Music
  • lots of eco-friendly vendors

We’ve got two new boxes of yarn (sneak peeks on Friday!) and new patterns!

Come by and say hello anytime on either day!

And if you’re having any trouble with your knitting, bring it by our booth (we’ll probably be less busy on Sunday and towards the end of the day) and I’ll help you with it!

See you there!

Adventurous Lace – New Dates!

Haruni1The Adventurous Lace class will be held May 13 + 27 in the beautiful Gardens at the Eureka Inn (just down the street from our former shop in downtown Jonesborough). I had hoped to start the class sooner, but the needles haven’t come in yet and several of you have mentioned that you can’t find the required needles anywhere else.

You can buy the needles at the beginning of class (for this class AND the Learn to Knit Lace class!), but you MUST be registered before the class.

You don’t have to pay before the class, but you MUST let me know that you’re coming before the class! To RSVP, email me (tara@anovelyarn.com).

Here’s a sneak peek at my version of the shawl:

Moving beyond the walls

Since opening in December, we have learned a lot.

We’ve learned that you love classes.
We’ve learned that you are passionate about learning new techniques.
We’ve learned that you love to get together and stitch and chat and share.

We’ve also learned a bit about what you don’t need.

And after learning all this, we’ve decided that we can serve you best if we do something radical.
Something un-yarn-shop-y, something that will be better for YOU and US.
We are moving beyond the borders of the shop’s four walls.

We have decided to leave the Jonesborough shop, and head out into the world.

As we become a shop without borders, we can give you more of what you want.
More classes, more personal lessons, more stitching time.
More ideas, more creativity, more custom yarns + shawl pins.

I will still be teaching classes, all of the classes we have on the schedule, at locations around town. (Check the class schedule to see where each class will be held).
Only now, because I won’t be stuck in the shop for five days a week, I can teach even MORE classes.
I can meet for more one-on-one sessions or teach a class that YOU make up for you and a few friends.
Coming next week, you’ll be able to register for classes right on the website!

Our Stitch Therapies will still gather. Only now, we can hold even MORE. Friday evenings, during the weekdays, even Saturday afternoons; we’ll find times that work for the most people and we’ll get together all over town to knit and crochet and eat yummy baked goods.

This website will become the central hub for all of our yarny pursuits. It will will tell you where to next find us, what classes we’re holding, and all the newest fibery goodness.
We’ll also be sending out email updates (sign up here) every other week, so you’ll never miss a chance to get some yarn or classes.

And we, A Novel Yarn, still bursting with handmade yarn and fiber, will have a weekly booth at Jonesborough’s farmer’s market and at local craft shows (the first is the Lavender Festival, May 22 + 23).
You will be able to get your weekly dose of yarn + fiber + question-answering every week at the farmer’s market, starting May 29.

We hope that you’ll join us in celebrating this new step by joining us for a class or coming by our booth at the Lavender Festival.

Thank you so much for joining us on the first part of the journey and for celebrating with us during this next adventure.

Yarn-lovingly yours,
Tara

PS. If you have ANY questions, please email me: tara@anovelyarn.com

PPS. If you’ve already registered for an upcoming class, we’ll be holding it at the Eureka Inn. See you there!

The cutest baby sweater in the world

We just got in the sweetest baby sweater (and kits to make them!) in the world.

Daytime Therapy

Having a rough week?

Need a little therapy?

Come by today, anytime between noon & 2pm for Stitch Therapy!

If there are too many people to meet in the shop, we’ll be 2 doors down, at the gorgeous Historic Eureka Inn (there’s parking behind the Eureka that you are welcome to use!)

Bring any project you like and get to know other local stitchers!

Feeling Adventurous?

Last week I explained all the reasons why you might not want to knit Haruni.

But, that was just for the brand-new-to-increasing crowd.

Not you!

If you can spot a yo or have decreased for a sweater (or gloves or socks), then you are ready to get adventurous.

haruni

Really.

I started the pattern last week  and I am blown away by how clearly the pattern was written.

It has both charts (which you’ll learn to read in the Adventurous Lace class) AND written instructions.

It has a detailed description of what you’re doing and how your doing it.

But, of course, if you come to the class, you won’t just get the pattern, you’ll also get lots of relaxed instruction.

I’ll teach you:

  • to read a lace chart
  • tips for memorizing the repeat, so you can knit on the go
  • to “read” your knitting, so you know where you are in the chart
  • how to pick the right yarn + needles for a lace project
  • the fancy bind-off
  • tips for blocking your lace

The class is 3 separate sessions, each an hour long. We’ll get started in the first class, switch to the second chart in the second class (and answer any questions!) and do the pretty bind-off in the last class.

If you’re feeling adventurous, check out all the details here (and call to register!)
